In June 2001, Sara graduated from Sandia Preparatory School. Sandia Preparatory School is an independent co-educational school located in Albuquerque, New Mexico. While a student at Sandia Prep, Sara earned the following honors:
In June 2001, after her high school graduation, Sara entered the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, where she was recruited to play volleyball. She played varsity volleyball for a little over a year; however, during her sophomore year, she decided to turn her attention to a military skills competition at West Point called the Sandhurst Cup Competition. Sara earned a Bachelors of Science Degree in International Relations from USMA on 28 May 2005, and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Signal Corps.
