Reception Day (R-Day) 2001

On 30 June 2001, the West Point Class of 2005 arrived at the academy to begin Reception Day, more commonly called R-Day. On R-Day, the new cadets are politely separated from their families and herded into the cloistered confines of the Cadet Central Area where upperclassmen take charge. The academy cadre carefully organized the day's events, however, it appears to be total chaos to the new cadets as upperclassmen shout orders and instructions. The vast majority of new cadets will tell you R-Day was their worst experience at West Point. Many new cadets, both male and female, cry themselves to sleep that night and wonder what they got themselves into. R-Day is the beginning of six weeks of Cadet Basic Training (CBT).
